Murakamimania, is about to hit North America in five days. We’re kind of in a Eugenidesmania, currently. Which I’ve been a part of. Never a fan of buying hardcover books, but I thought The Marriage Plot would be worth the investment. I was right, it’s a wonderful book, enjoyed my time with it.

I’ve decided against getting involved with Murakamimania, until the mania has died down. I have my reasons for doing so, the reasons being really boring, and uninspired. Instead of Murakamimania (promise I won’t say Murakamaimania again, damn it!) I’ve decided to go with the legend of American literature, Herman Melville’s Moby Dick or, The Whale. In doing so I purchased this lovely to look at edition. My other copy was small, the print tiny. Those of you that follow this blog (all twenty of you) know this is my second go around with The Whale. I’ll be happy to inform you (Casey nobody cares) this go around is going really well. I’m a more committed reader this time around. There’s a certain cadence with Moby Dick. It’s tricky, Melville didn’t screw around. I’m so glad he didn’t, it’s just on another level then other literature of it’s time, or any time.

That’s really all I have to say. Hope everyone is doing great, I’ll be through the doors of Powell’s in like two sleeps. Life is pretty good. Stay classy.

Moby Dick

Dear Mr. Melville,

You wrote a masterpiece, called Moby Dick. I started reading it and got to about page one hundred. It’s so dense reading one page feels like reading three pages. My brain is tricky sometimes and the prose you chose to write with is hurting it. The story is beautiful and deserves my audience. But I’ve put your masterpiece down for now. I’ve placed it back on my shelf for another time. I’m not a quitter usually, but I will not make it through the next four hundred pages at this time. Please forgive me as I’ve chosen to read something different and unassuming.

Rest in Peace, I’ll talk to you later.

-Casey
