Book Review
The Time Travelers Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
I just put this book down on the coffee table with my bookmark on it’s cover. This in my household signals the end of the book. I thought of leaving the bookmark in for a couple of days. So I could glance at it and think to myself maybe it’s not over, maybe I haven’t finished it yet. But no, like all books they come to an end leaving you with a memory. An experience to share with others.
The Time Travelers Wife is chaotic. It gets read in a blur. You feel like your are playing catch up. You want to cheat and flip ahead, see what’s around the corner. But you don’t. You take it as it comes, ignoring the foreshadowing and that feeling of knowing whats going to happen in the end. At the core the love story is the constant, it never waivers. But all around it, there are ups and downs, this year and that year, the coming and going. I don’t want to dive into what this book is about. There’s to much I’d ruin for readers that haven’t had the chance to enjoy.
This is a supreme book. A book of major talent. The fact that this is Audrey Niffenegger’s first novel is astonishing. Where does something like this come from as a writer…? To be able to produce such fiction is daunting.
The Time Travelers Wife will become a gift I give to every woman I know. Some men I will tell about it, but not all men will enjoy. I’m richer for the experience, it’s a wonderful piece of literature.
